Commissariat Store exhibitions
Due to damage sustained from a partial collapse of the William Street frontage on 13 January 2011 the Commissariat Store closed temporarily. A huge effort on the part of the Queensland Government has resulted in great progress being made to get the Commissariat site operational again.Curator Janice Hess and her assistant Robyn
Stephensen set up displays on the middle floor of the Store. They decide on a topic
and look for museum items and useful photographs from the Society’s huge collection
of nearly 62,880 photographs and digital images. They research the history of the
topic and items including their provenance. Jan and Robyn can take months
researching and organising their displays. The most recent exhibition is the
medals and
flood exhibition.
The Hon Simon Finn MP opened the floods exhibition at 1.15 on Sunday.

GROUND FLOOR PERMANENT EXHIBITION
The whole of the ground floor is devoted to a model of the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement on the Brisbane River. Using copies of building plans, our modeller has constructed each building in a 1:72 scale. Depicted on the ground floor these models have been placed as indicated in George Browne’s 1839 map of the settlement and relative to the Brisbane River.
This exhibition shows the Georgian-influenced building design and gives a clear indication of the size of the settlement. Each building and its outbuildings are clearly labelled. This exhibition will be of particular interest to students looking at spatial relationships, the architectural history of this era and the history of convict Brisbane.
