Commissariat Store a convict museum

CONVICT BRISBANE

HISTORY YOUR STUDENTS CAN SEE

The COMMISSARIAT STORE (1829), Brisbane’s oldest occupied building, is an ideal venue for your students to learn about the beginnings of Brisbane. Our specially-designed education program will show your students what life was like in convict Brisbane.

The Society appreciates opportunities to show the building and the convict display to members, visitors, school children, and tourists. The Store is home to the Society's extensive Welsby Library, museum collection, and cultural activities.
  • Spend time in a building actually built by convicts.
  • How were the convicts treated?
  • Where did they live?
  • What did Brisbane look like in 1838?
  • Handle items that would have been familiar to convicts.
  • Try on a set of leg irons.
  • Design and build a model settlement.

We can help you to design your own program so that you maximise your students’ learning experience. Match your visit to the Commissariat Store with a visit to Parliament House, Queensland Sciencentre or Museum of Brisbane. Lunch in Queen’s Park, the City Botanic Gardens or Southbank. For a complete program of Convict Brisbane, include the Commissariat Store as part of an Urban Environmental Education Unit program (tel 3552 7111).
