Royal Historical Society of Queensland
Queensland's peak history body
Welsby Library
Due to damage sustained from a partial collapse of the William Street frontage
on 13 January 2011 the Commissariat Store closed temporarily. A huge effort on the
part of the Queensland Government has resulted in great progress being made to get the
Commissariat site operational again.
The Commissariat Store has reopened, the top and middle floors only. Stone masons are
working on damage to the retaining wall and there is no access at this
level to visitors or volunteers and no free parking.
The Royal Historical Society of Queensland is well-known for its Welsby Library
in our headquarters, the Commissariat Store at 115 William Street, Brisbane.
The Welsby Library contains many rare and unique items and acts as a valuable resource for the public, complementing other principal repositories of historical records and information such as the
John Oxley Library, Queensland State Archives and Queensland Supreme
Court Library.
Available to researchers is the Welsby Library's incredible collection of items that are of interest to those researching Queensland's
history. There are more than 4,993 books and booklets, 279 Brisbane files, 605 District files, 1,312
Family files, 1,048 Subject files, 96 albums, 21,849 photos which includes 4,697
digital images, 630 maps and plans and 2,364 archive files in the collection.
The Library also holds various Queensland Parliamentary Papers,
Votes and Proceedings of the Legislative Assembly and
Queensland Government Gazettes from 1861 to 1899.
You can buy a CD or DVD of the Welsby Library catalogue for $45
plus
$5 postage and handling or order and collect one from the Commissariat
Store. An upgrade only cost $5 and if posted another $5.00!
For an upgrade,
if you have a memory stick and visit the library when the Hon Librarian is in
attendance,
usually a Tuesday or Friday, then for $5.00 you can quickly get an updated version of the
RHSQ Welsby Library catalogue
Donations of books, booklets, photos and other items relevant to Queensland history
are always welcome.
